HIPPOS HIPPOS EVERYWHERE BUT NOT A DROP TO DRINK
If you want to see hippos the place to go is the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, St Lucia, South Africa. Ironically, because the lakes are brackish, the hippos have to travel great distances to find fresh water.
The 332,000 hectare Park contains three major lake systems, eight interlinking ecosystems, most of South Africa’s remaining swamp forests, Africa’s largest estuarine system, 526 bird species and 25,000 year-old coastal dunes – among the highest in the world.
The name iSimangaliso means miracle and wonder, which aptly describes this unique place. Unbelievably, I shot the following footage from a normal tourist pontoon during our 2015 winter visit to St Lucia.
